How Modern Palm Oil Mills Work
Fully automated palm oil mills process fresh fruit bunches (FFB) through several key stages to extract the crude palm oil (CPO). Below is a detailed breakdown of the palm oil production process:
1. Raw Material Reception & Sterilization
Fresh palm fruit bunches are unloaded to the receiving station where they are cleaned and sterilized. High-pressure steam treatment inactivates enzymes, prevents degradation of oils and softens the fruits for easier threshing.
2. Threshing & Fruit Separation
The sterilized bunches are fed into a threshing machine where strong vibrations separate the palm fruits from the empty bunches. Then, the loose fruits are conveyed to the digestion stage.
3. Digestion & Mechanical Pressing
The palm fruits are heated and mechanically agitated in a digester to break down the oil-containing cells. The mashed pulp is then fed into a double-screw palm oil press to extract the gross palm oil under high pressure.
4. Oil Clarification & Purification
The pressed gross oil contains impurities and water. The clarification system utilizes hot water washing, vibrating screens and settling tanks to remove solids and water to produce clean crude palm oil (CPO).
5. Palm Kernel Recovery
After pressing, the remaining fiber and nut mixture is separated and cracked to extract palm kernels. These palm kernels can be further processed into palm kernel oil (PKO).
Palm Oil Refinery Plant – From Crude Oil to Edible Oil
For higher-grade oil production, crude palm oil must undergo refining. KMEC provides three types of palm oil refinery plants:
