The Oilseed Drum Softening Machine (also known as a drum softening cooker) is an indispensable core piece of equipment in modern oil plants, particularly in the pretreatment section of facilities using solvent extraction technology. By precisely controlling the temperature and moisture of oilseeds, it effectively improves the physical characteristics of the material, creating optimal conditions for subsequent flaking, prepressing, and solvent extraction processes, thereby significantly enhancing the final oil yield and quality. The single-unit processing capacity ranges from 50 to 1500 tons per day, meeting the needs of various production scales.

Why is Oilseed “Conditioning” Necessary?

Oilseed conditioning is a critical pretreatment step before oil extraction. Its fundamental purpose is to adjust the moisture and temperature of the oilseed, making it soft and malleable (i.e., providing elasticity and plasticity). This is crucial for the subsequent flaking process:

  • For low-oil, low-moisture oilseeds like soybeans:These oilseeds are inherently hard. Direct flaking tends to generate excessive fines (powder), which hinders subsequent pressing and solvent penetration, ultimately reducing the oil yield. Conditioned soybeans can be flaked into thinner, more compact, and less fragile flakes.
  •  For high-oil or high-hull oilseeds (e.g., rapeseed):Conditioning adjusts their mechanical properties, allowing them to be flattened effectively during flaking while preventing issues like sticking to the rolls or generating excessive fines due to being too soft.

In short, conditioning ensures that oilseeds enter the flaking mill in an optimal physical state, forming the foundation for improving the overall line’s oil yield and final product quality.

 Working Principle

The main body of the equipment is a slowly rotating horizontal drum. Oilseeds enter from the feed end and are uniformly lifted and showered inside the drum as it rotates. During this process, the oilseeds come into full contact with the drum wall and internal heating elements (such as a squirrel cage heating structure), achieving uniform heating through conduction and radiation. Simultaneously, through the tumbling action, the oilseeds undergo moisture and heat exchange and equilibration, eventually reaching the desired conditioned state. The drum’s rotation speed and processing time can be flexibly adjusted based on the oilseed type and initial moisture content to ensure optimal conditioning results.
