Canola Oil Processing Plant – Key Stages
Canola and rapeseed contain approximately 40% oil content, making a combination of mechanical pressing and solvent extraction the most effective method to maximize oil yield. From seed preparation to pressing, extraction, and refining, every stage of our canola oil plant is engineered for optimal efficiency, consistent quality, and high recovery rates.
1. Rapeseed Pre-treatment
The process begins with thorough cleaning of the seeds. Magnets remove metallic impurities, while screening systems eliminate dirt and foreign materials that could hinder extraction. The cleaned seeds are then conditioned in a cooker to optimize moisture and temperature. This step prepares the seed structure for better oil release. Next, the seeds are crushed and flaked using mechanical rollers, rupturing the cell walls to form thin flakes. This flaking process significantly improves oil yield during pressing.
2. Oil Expelling / Solvent Extraction
Mechanical Screw Pressing
The first stage of extraction uses a canola oil press (screw oil expeller). The press extracts oil from processed seeds through continuous pressure and friction.
- Pressing Oil Yield: Approximately 75%
- Residual oil remains in the pressed cake meal.
Solvent Extraction System
To recover residual oil from the cake meal, large-scale oil plants typically employ solvent extraction, commonly using hexane.
This process:
- Maximizes total oil yield
- Reduces residual oil in meal
- Supports high-capacity production
The combination of pressing and solvent extraction is the standard process for modern rapeseed oil processing plants.
Cold-Pressing & Canola Cold Press Oil
Growing demand for natural, chemical-free vegetable oils has driven the development of cold-pressed rapeseed oil production. Cold-pressing operates at low temperatures (<60°C), preserving nutrients more effectively but yielding lower oil output and a milder flavor. Hot-pressing involves roasting at high temperatures before pressing, achieving higher yields and a richer aroma but resulting in some nutrient loss. Cold-pressed canola oil is an ideal choice for health-conscious markets and specialty cooking oil brands. The cold-pressing method follows the same basic steps as described above but excludes hexane extraction. We offer specialized cold press rapeseed oil machines for small to medium-scale producers.

3. Canola Oil Refining
Crude canola oil contains impurities such as phospholipids, free fatty acids, pigments, waxes, and odors that affect clarity, stability, and shelf life. Rapeseed oil refining involves several stages to produce clear, safe, and market-ready edible oil:
- Degumming: Removes phospholipids and gums.
- Neutralization: Reduces free fatty acids.
- Bleaching: Eliminates pigments and residues.
- Winterization/Dewaxing: Removes waxes to prevent cloudiness.
- Deodorization: Strips volatile compounds for a neutral taste and odor.
The refined oil meets international quality standards and is suitable for cooking, frying, baking, and food manufacturing.
About Canola (Rapeseed) Oil

Canola was developed from traditional rapeseed in the 1970s through selective breeding in Canada. It is characterized by low levels of erucic acid and glucosinolates, making it a heart-healthy cooking oil rich in monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids. Today, canola oil is widely used worldwide as a versatile salad and frying oil, as well as in margarines, shortenings, snack foods, and baked goods.
