Palm Oil Mill Process:
Transforming fresh fruit bunches (FFB) into high-quality crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel oil (PKO) requires strict process control. Below is a detailed overview of each stage in a modern palm oil mill.
1. Bunch Reception & FFB Quality Control
To prevent enzymatic hydrolysis that elevates Free Fatty Acid (FFA) levels, harvested FFB must be processed within 24 to 72 hours. Prolonged delays can cause FFA to exceed 5%, severely downgrading oil quality. KMEC advises clients on logistics optimization and supplies FFB grading platforms to ensure only prime fruit enters the mill.
2. Sterilization
Sterilization is the first mechanical process performed using a palm oil mill sterilizer. FFBs are loaded into horizontal or vertical vessels and subjected to steam treatment at 130°C–145°C under 2.5–3.1 bar pressure for 75–90 minutes. This process: inactivates lipases to prevent free fatty acid (FFA) formation, softens the pulp for easier debudding, and facilitates kernel shelling. Modern sterilization systems also recover condensate water, conserving water resources.
3. Threshing (Fruit Stripping)
Sterilized FFB enters a rotary drum thresher. This machine beats the bunches to detach palm fruits from empty bunches. The separated empty fruit bunches (EFB) are not waste—KMEC integrates EFB management systems to convert them into biomass pellets or mulching material for plantation fertilization.
4. Digestion & Screw Pressing
Clean fruits are fed into a steam-heated digester. The rotating arms mash the pericarp, rupturing oil cells. This mashed mash is then fed into our patented double-screw palm oil press. Under intense compression, the press separates:
- Liquor phase: Crude oil mixed with water.
- Solid phase: Press cake (fiber + nuts).
Our screw press technology achieves residual oil rates below 6% in press cake, significantly outperforming industry averages.
5. Oil Clarification & Drying
The crude oil mixture contains water, sand, and fibrous fines. Through a series of vibrating screens, settling tanks, and high-speed purifiers, we recover clean CPO with <0.1% impurities. The clarified oil is then dried in a vacuum dryer to meet international CPO shipping specifications.
6.Palm Oil Refining (Optional but Recommended)
For customers targeting the edible oil market, crude palm oil must undergo refining. KMEC provides physical and chemical refining equipment for:
