Fresh Fruit Bunches to CPO vs Kernels to PKO – How Do the Two Extraction Processes Differ?

The oil palm fruit takes two entirely different paths through the mill. The flesh is pressed into crude palm oil (CPO). The kernel is pressed into palm kernel oil (PKO). These two routes have almost nothing in common – from raw material form and pre-treatment methods to the core equipment involved. This article breaks down the extraction processes for both oils, comparing the process routes and equipment configurations side by side.

1. CPO Extraction: From Fresh Fruit Bunches to Crude Palm Oil

Once fresh fruit bunches (FFB) arrive at the mill, they enter a complete palm oil pressing line. The processing of FFB typically involves several key stages.

1.1 Sterilisation

FFB are loaded into palm fruit sterilisation tanks and treated with high-temperature steam at approximately 140°C for 75–90 minutes. Sterilisation serves three critical purposes: it inactivates lipase enzymes to prevent free fatty acid (FFA) formation; it softens the fruit, making it easier to detach from the bunches; and it coagulates pectin substances, preparing the fruit for effective oil release. This step directly affects the final oil’s acid value and overall quality.

1.2 Threshing

After sterilisation, the bunches are fed into a palm fruit thresher (a drum-type thresher). The rotating drum mechanically separates the fruit from the empty bunches. The separated fruit moves to the next stage, while the empty fruit bunches are collected and used as boiler fuel or compost material.

1.3 Digestion

The threshed fruit enters a digester – a vertical cylindrical vessel with stirring arms. Under steam heating and continuous agitation, the stirring arms break down the fruit cell walls, releasing the oil from the cells and forming a uniform mash. The effectiveness of digestion directly determines the oil yield in the subsequent pressing stage.

1.4 Pressing

The digested mash is fed into a twin-screw press for oil extraction. Medium to large palm oil mills commonly use twin-screw presses because they offer higher throughput and more stable oil extraction. The crude oil mixture obtained from pressing typically contains about 35%–45% oil, with the remainder being water and fibrous impurities. The press cake – a mixture of fibre and kernels – is sent to the palm kernel recovery system.

1.5 Clarification and Purification

The pressed crude oil mixture first enters continuous settling tanks, where it is held at approximately 90°C to allow gravity separation – oil rises to the top while impurities settle to the bottom. The separated oil then passes through high-speed centrifugal separators and vacuum dryers to reduce moisture content to below 0.1%, producing storable crude palm oil.

2. PKO Extraction: From Kernels to Crude Palm Kernel Oil

The raw material for palm kernel oil comes from palm kernels recovered from the press cake (or from separately collected palm nuts). This production line uses equipment that is entirely different from palm oil pressing.

2.1 Fibre-Kernel Separation

The press cake (a mixture of fibre and kernels) first passes through a fibre-kernel separator. Air classification blows away the lightweight fibre, while the heavier kernels fall into a collection system. The separated kernels move to the next stage.

2.2 Kernel Drying and Grading

The separated kernels are left to dry in kernel dryers for 6–18 hours, with temperatures controlled at 60–80°C. This softens the shells and reduces moisture content. The dried kernels then pass through a grading machine for size sorting.

2.3 Cracking and Kernel-Shell Separation

The graded kernels enter a palm kernel cracker – commonly a ripple mill – for cracking. The cracked mixture then undergoes dry and wet two-stage separation to completely separate the kernel meat from the shells. The purity of this separation directly affects subsequent oil yield and oil quality. The recovered kernels are dried again for an additional 14–15 hours at 60–70°C.

2.4 Pressing

The dried kernels are fed into a palm kernel oil press – typically a single-screw press – for oil extraction. Due to the hardness of the kernels, two-stage pressing is often used to maximise oil yield. The crude oil passes through screening tanks and filters to remove solid impurities before entering storage tanks.

4. Market Prices and Investment Considerations

The average price of crude palm oil in 2025 was approximately $1,007/tonne, rising 4.5% year-on-year. Palm kernel oil prices rose an extraordinary 49% in 2025 to $2,103/tonne.

The palm oil market is larger and more stable, making it well-suited for large-scale food production (cooking oil, bakery, confectionery, margarine). Palm kernel oil commands a higher price and is growing faster, but the raw material supply is more limited – kernels account for only a small fraction of the total fruit weight – making it better suited for higher-value markets (cosmetics, personal care, confectionery fats, etc.).

For investors who already operate a palm oil mill, adding a palm kernel recovery line – fibre-kernel separation → cracking → pressing – is a common way to boost overall profitability. It’s essentially one capital investment that yields two revenue streams.

5. Summary

FFB to CPO and kernels to PKO may start from the same fruit, but their process routes, equipment configurations, and market positioning are almost completely different. A palm oil production line revolves around sterilisation → threshing → digestion → twin-screw pressing → clarification, with highly specialised equipment. A palm kernel oil production line revolves around drying → cracking → kernel-shell separation → single-screw pressing, with more versatile equipment.
