
One palm fruit yields two completely different oils – palm oil and palm kernel oil. The former comes from the flesh, the latter from the kernel. Many newcomers to the industry ask the same question: Is the equipment for pressing palm fruit flesh the same as for pressing palm kernels? Can one machine handle both?
The short answer is: No.
Although these two oils sit on the same supply chain, they share almost no common ground – from raw material characteristics and pre-treatment processes to pressing equipment. Trying to process both materials with the same machine will compromise oil yield and risk damaging the equipment. 1. Same Fruit, Two Different Oils
Palm oil is extracted from the flesh (mesocarp) of the oil palm fruit, while palm kernel oil comes from the seed (kernel) inside the fruit’s hard shell. Their fatty acid profiles and physical properties could hardly be more different.
Palm oil is rich in palmitic acid, with a relatively balanced ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats (approximately 50% saturated, 40% monounsaturated), giving it a semi-solid texture at room temperature. Palm kernel oil, by contrast, contains roughly 80% saturated fat, with exceptionally high levels of lauric acid. Its composition is much closer to coconut oil, and its texture is firmer and more solid. These fundamental compositional differences mean the two oils require entirely different processing approaches.
The key point: flesh is soft, kernels are hard – and that’s the fundamental reason the equipment cannot be shared.
2. Why Can’t the Same Equipment Be Used?
Many investors assume that since both involve pressing, a single universal oil press could handle both flesh and kernels. That assumption is wrong.
First, the hardness difference is orders of magnitude apart. Palm fruit flesh is a soft, fibrous material, while palm kernels are hard, dense particles. Pressing palm fruit flesh typically requires pressures in the range of 2–3 MPa to release the oil. Processing palm kernels demands much higher pressures – 5–7 MPa – to fracture the hard cellular structure and extract the oil. This means the two equipment types differ fundamentally in design pressure, motor power, and structural strength. Palm kernel presses typically require motors in the 80–100 kW range to meet the higher pressure demands.
Second, the pressing chamber geometry and screw designs are completely different. A palm oil line deals with high-moisture, high-fibre soft pulp, while a palm kernel line handles abrasive, hard solid particles. They require different pressing cage designs, screw geometries, and wear protection measures. Forcing one to do the other’s job will only accelerate wear and reduce oil yield.
Third, the pre-treatment processes are vastly different. Fruit flesh requires sterilisation, threshing, and digestion, while the core steps for kernels are drying, cracking, and kernel-shell separation. The equipment sets for these two pre-treatment lines barely overlap.
In short: a palm oil press is dedicated equipment – it is specifically designed for pressing palm fruit flesh and cannot be used for other oilseeds. A palm kernel oil press, on the other hand, is more versatile – besides palm kernels, it can also process sunflower seeds, soybeans, peanuts, and other common oilseeds. But the two cannot substitute for each other. Using a palm oil press for palm kernels risks damaging the machine; using a palm kernel press for palm fruit flesh will not deliver acceptable oil yield.

Palm fruit flesh has high oil content, but also significant moisture and fibre. A complete palm oil pressing line typically includes the following core equipment:
- Steriliser: Fresh fruit bunches are first treated with high-temperature steam to inactivate lipase enzymes, prevent free fatty acid (FFA) formation, and soften the fruit for subsequent threshing.
- Thresher: Mechanically separates the fruit from the bunches. The empty fruit bunches can be used as boiler fuel or compost material.
- Digester: Uses heat and mechanical agitation to break down the fruit cell walls, releasing oil from the cells and forming a uniform mash.
- Screw press: The core piece of equipment. Medium to large mills typically choose twin-screw presses for greater throughput and more stable oil extraction. The press must be specifically designed for palm fruit flesh, with operating pressures typically in the 2–3 MPa range.
- Clarification system: Includes settling tanks, vibrating screens, plate filters, and vacuum dryers to remove fibres, moisture, and suspended solids from the crude oil, producing storable crude palm oil (CPO).
- Refining system (optional): If the final product is destined for the food market, the crude oil must undergo degumming, deacidification, bleaching, and deodorisation.
Palm Kernel Oil Pressing Line
Palm kernels are hard, and the pre-treatment process is entirely different.
- Palm kernel dryer: Reduces the moisture content of the kernels, making them easier to crack and press.
- Palm kernel cracker: Breaks the kernels into smaller pieces and separates the kernel meat from the hard shells. The purity of the kernel-shell separation directly determines the subsequent oil yield and oil quality.
- Screw press (typically single-screw): Extracts crude palm kernel oil from the cracked kernel pieces. The equipment must withstand higher pressures (5–7 MPa), and the screw is typically made of alloy steel for enhanced wear resistance. Motor power requirements are also higher, typically in the 80–100 kW range.
- Refining system: Similar to palm oil, crude palm kernel oil also requires refining to meet edible or industrial standards.
4. Oil Yield Comparison
Oil yield is one of the most critical metrics for any investor.
Palm oil: Palm fruit flesh typically accounts for 60%–70% of the total fruit weight, with an oil yield of approximately 20%–25% of the flesh weight. In 2024, Malaysia’s average oil extraction rate (OER) for the palm oil industry was 19.67%.
Palm kernel oil: Kernels make up only a small fraction of the total fruit weight, with an oil yield of approximately 4%–8% of kernel weight.
Important note: Don’t be misled by a direct comparison of these percentages. Although the palm kernel oil yield percentage appears much lower, palm kernel oil typically commands a significantly higher market price than crude palm oil, and the two serve entirely different markets – the business case for each is different.
5. Market Price Trends

Market data shows clear differences in price trends between crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel oil (PKO). In the first half of 2025, the average mill-gate price for CPO was approximately $868–869/tonne. Meanwhile, palm kernel oil prices rose 94% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, with the price ratio between the two increasing to 74% – up from a quarterly average of 59% since 2020.
What this means: palm kernel oil prices are rising much faster than palm oil prices. For price-sensitive investors, the profit margins on a palm kernel oil production line may be expanding rapidly.
6. How to Choose the Right Production Line for Your Business
Choose a palm oil production line if:
- You have reliable access to a steady supply of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) – ideally from your own plantation or a stable supplier
- Your target market is the food sector – cooking oil, baking, confectionery, margarine
- You are aiming for large-scale, stable output for the mass market
- Your budget can support a complete sterilisation-threshing-digestion-pressing-clarification line
Choose a palm kernel oil production line if:
- You have reliable access to a steady supply of palm kernels – either as a byproduct of your own palm oil mill or from external suppliers
- Your target market is cosmetics, personal care, or oleochemicals – palm kernel oil is in strong demand for soaps, shampoos, surfactants, and related applications
- You value equipment versatility – a palm kernel oil press can also process sunflower seeds, soybeans, peanuts, and other oilseeds
- You can accept a lower percentage oil yield in exchange for higher unit value and profit margins
An overlooked option: adding a palm kernel recovery line
For those who already operate a palm oil mill, adding a palm kernel recovery line is a common way to boost overall profitability. The press cake (palm fibre and kernel mixture) left over after pressing still contains a significant number of palm kernels. Separating these kernels and pressing them separately generates additional palm kernel oil revenue. This recovery line includes fibre-kernel separation, kernel cracking, and palm kernel pressing equipment. It’s essentially one capital investment that yields two revenue streams.
7. Common Misconceptions and Key Considerations
Misconception 1: One machine fits all. As we’ve made clear – the physical differences between flesh and kernels mean equipment cannot be shared.
Misconception 2: Focusing only on equipment price and ignoring operating costs. Palm kernel presses have higher capital costs and energy consumption – but the product also commands a higher price. You need to calculate the full input-output equation.
Misconception 3: Overlooking raw material supply stability. Whichever line you choose, raw material supply is the foundation. Flesh and kernels come from different supply chains with different stability profiles.
Misconception 4: Skipping the refining step. Neither crude palm oil nor crude palm kernel oil can be consumed directly or used in demanding industrial applications – refining is not optional.
